Quick-Fix Tips For Your Plumbing Emergencies We appreciate your interest and hope that you find our advice helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Where's the hot water? When there is no hot water, one of three things is probably wrong with your water heater: 1. If there is no loss of water pressure, but the water supply is cold, it's probably a burned out pilot light or a blown fuse. Check the gas-fired unit to see if the pilot light is off. Follow the unit's instructions to relight. For an electric unit, check the fuse panel and flip the correct circuit breaker to "on". 2. If there is a reduction in water pressure, check your water heater for leakage. If it is leaking, turn the valve on the top of the unit off. Next, shut off the fuel. Turn the gas control valve off for a gas-fired unit, or flip the circuit breaker off for an electric unit. 3. In gas-fired units only, the gas valve or thermocouple could fail. For this, call a professional immediately. Water, water everywhere...the pipe burst! If a pipe has burst and is flooding your home, you can identify the problem before calling a licensed professional. Here's what you should do first: 1. Reduce pipe pressure by opening the faucets of the fixture at the lowest level of the home, usually the basement sink. Then identify the exact location and nature of the problem. 2. For hot water line problems, turn off the water supply into the water heater. Turn the main line back on so cold water can be used while the pipe is being fixed. 3. If the water is turned off for an extended period of time, turn the water heater off. What if you have a frozen pipe? During a very cold winter, frozen pipes are a common problem. If the pipes are located in a cabinet or crawlspace: 1. Raise the house temperature to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Open the cabinet and blow the warmer house air on the pipe with a fan. 3. Use a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner as a blower and direct it on the frozen area. 4. Soak bath towels in boiling water and wrap them around the frozen pipe. How to find out the right size of water heater you need? How many residents? How many baths/showers? Add one for each automatic dishwasher and wash machine. NOTE: In homes with spas, whirlpools or oversized baths, a plumbing contractor can help select the correct size.
